Girl dies after foster parents give her liquor

GUNTUR: In a shocking incident, an 18-month-old girl died after she was forcibly fed cheap liquor by her foster parents on Monday.

The girl died on way to hospital. Police arrested the girl's foster father at Government General Hospital (GGH) here while he was trying to flee after leaving the dead child in the casualty section. Police on Tuesday arrested two more people and are questioning them.

The girl's biological parents, who separated some time ago, are now holding each other responsible for her death.

The girl's mother Raheema is believed to have requested a close relative, Saida, to hand over the child to her biological father, Meera, who lives at Nallachervuru area in the city two weeks back. However, Meera allegedly refused to accept the child saying that she was not his daughter.

Subsequently, Saida handed over the girl to a childless couple. Ismail, the adoptive father, a daily wager and his wife reportedly consumed cheap liquor on Monday and then forcibly fed the girl with liquor.

On seeing that that the child was struggling to breathe, Ismail rushed her to the government general hospital, but she died on the way. Sensing trouble, Ismail left the child in the casualty section. When Ismail tried to leave the hospital stealthily, people grew suspicious and handed him over to the police.

The local police took Ismail into custody after doctors declared that the child was brought dead to the hospital. Raheema accused Saida and her husband of conspiring to kill the girl. She alleged that Meera might have prompted the adoptive parents to eliminate the girl, as he had deserted her only on the ground that she gave birth to two girls. Raheema's elder daughter now stays with Meera.
