The Mainstream Media

on Mon, 03/12/2012 - 20:08

I find it very interesting to see the way our media outlets portray stories on child abuse.

Particularly the way that we tend to see stories from around the globe as well as our own Australia, about child abuse or deaths.

What interests me is that when DoCS or the various agencies around the country make a mistake with someones child/children we never seem to see the same type of hype.

It is as though the only stories the mainstream media will cover are the stories where the parents have committed some form of assault.

The effect of this is that the community sees DoCS as the protectors

US kidnap suspect jailed on $8 million bond

There are monsters in our midst. How can no one have known about this man? It is just too much to cope with and the tears have been flowing around the world for these little girls taken and yet also in joy for their saving grace, they have escaped and survived, it is a sad sad day but a day to feel that there is always a glimmer of hope. When faced with this evil, what does the world do. Does the world cry for a day and then go back to the way we all live? Does the world turn around and start to change? It takes a community to bring up a child. It takes people becoming a community.

MORAL OBLIGATION IS TO SAVE CHILDREN FIRST

By Noel Pearson chairman of the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership.

Families can indeed be supported to break the cycle and place their children in the sacred position that all children should have in our society.

LAST year a young mother from Aurukun on Cape York Peninsula had her three children removed by the Queensland child safety department. Anxious to have them back, late last year she appeared before the elders who convene the Family Responsibilities Commission in her community.

The elders told her to get her three children

'Think beyond protection' of children in foster care

Eugene Emory, director of clinical training at Emory University, who began his professional career as a social worker, was keynote speaker at the 20th annual Child Abuse Prevention Luncheon and Conference held by the Exchange Club Family Center of Northeast Florida.

"By empowering parents to learn nonviolent, nurturing parenting skills, we can strengthen families and put a stop to child abuse before it ever begins,

The power of families just can't be stressed enough, the realisation that abandonment creates trauma and often involves a conglomeration of public servants to enact it out on a

Foster Care Qld Letter to the Courier Mail

Foster Care Qld Letter to the Courier Mail

I am really glad that the Foster Care System agrees that there is a need for change indeed, in some cases however there is just no need at all for the Foster Care System.

Not all allegations are proven so why then are non proven allegations of child abuse in a judicial system passed off on by the Departments of Community Service to estrange Children from their Parents?

Nothing proved and a lot of complaints from vindictive family members, ex friends and/or some concerned community member who has nothing better to do than interfere with other peoples lives, for what ever reason.

Foster Care Queensland Complains to The Hon Tim Carmody

This is a letter Foster Care Queensland has pasted on its fb page for folks to see..

Foster Care Queensland, have responded to some mainstream news media reports from The Hon. Tim Carmody regarding the Commission into the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry to suggest that he does not know what he is talking about when it comes to submissions from people affected by the child protection system.

Churches have long records of harming kids in care but today they are still involved in the foster care system.

Mariah Maxwell From Foster Care to Forensic Psychology

“My going into foster care opened up a lot of doors. Without it, I wouldn’t have met Kate or my foster mother, Sheeila Foster – they pushed me, and encouraged me to finish school,”

Such a quote from someone who has come out the other side feeling good about themselves, but I still find myself asking the question; well if they can do this for a child why couldn't it be done for the whole family? That would be a wholistic approach that raises people up.

To me the approach we see around the world still seems to have a good deal of fallout, Mariah talks about how she does not want to be a

Councils praised for 45% rise in children placed for adoption

The number of children placed for adoption in England has nearly doubled over the last year, according to research by the Association of Directors of Children's Services.

Andrew Webb, president of the association, said the data - based on responses from 139 local authorities in England - shows the "real progress" councils are making to increase adoptions nationally. He said the figures, released today, were good news for children and prospective adopters alike and reveal an adoption landscape that is "brighter than many predicted".

Protecting Australian Children from Abusive Situations

The following articles are a preselect of viewpoints regarding the protection of Australian children, from those in authority, from Bruce Barbour, NSW State Ombudsman to Aileen Ashford, Tasmania's Child Protection Commissioner, auditing children in care including the case of a 12 year old girl in state care and sold into prostitution. Amongst a host of others and panel after panel of experts we indeed do continue have to deal with a revolving door that is not in the childrens best interests.

I would contest that this revolving door is a by

Exploring questions around Child Protection

In previous years, going back to 2008, television programs such as SBS Insight have explored the issues surrounding child protection using a range of panellists, including former foster children or children who had in some way experienced the system, representatives from NSW DOCS and DHS Victoria, case workers and psychologists.

Mostly, there is a general consensus from those directly affected by the Foster Care System on a number of points:

1) The system is corrupt and not coping in most states and is therefore not meeting the needs of
