Foster system full before boy's death

on Fri, 08/10/2012 - 02:21

A toddler who died in the care of an elderly woman was placed with her largely because there were no other foster parents available, an inquest has been told.

Two-year-old Luke Borusiewicz died in hospital on January 12, 2009, after he fell from his bed while in foster care.

At the inquest into his death on Thursday, former Families Plus placement support worker Colleen Lowe said the organisation had tried urgently to find a foster carer for Luke before Christmas 2008.

"There were very few options," she told the inquest in Cairns.

When asked if the then 74-year-old foster carer, who cannot be

Coronial inquest into toddler foster care tragedy

on Fri, 08/10/2012 - 01:22

MICHAEL Borusiewicz's grief over the death of his beautiful blue-eyed toddler is immeasurable, but he hopes to use it to bring about change to the government department he holds responsible for the tragedy.

Yesterday, Mr Borusiewicz sat through the first day of a coronial inquest into his two-year-old son Luke’s death and heard details of Child Safety Services’ decision to place him with a 74-year-old foster carer in Cairns.

The court heard the woman was taking care of four other foster children and had asked for help due to ill-health the day Luke hit his head and slipped into a coma on

Inquest probes toddler foster care death of Luke Borusiewicz

on Fri, 08/10/2012 - 01:08

A father whose young son died in foster care says he hopes an inquest into the toddler's death will expose flaws in Queensland's child safety system.

The Coroner's Court in Cairns, in far north Queensland, is this week examining the death of Luke Borusiewicz, 2, who died after sustaining head injuries while in the care of a 74-year-old woman in 2009.

Yesterday, the court heard the toddler's parents had raised concerns about bruises, abrasions and a burn he had sustained but nothing was done about their complaints.

The court heard that child safety officers had concerns about the fact the

Child safety worker had 'no choice' when placing toddler Luke Borusiewicz in care

on Wed, 07/25/2012 - 19:01

AN inquest into the death of a two-year-old foster child has heard his Cairns-based Child Safety Services caseworker was given ''no choice'' when it came to the home he was placed in.

Luke Borusiewicz died in January, 2009  after suffering a head injury while he was in the care of an elderly woman.

An inquest into his death opened in Cairns today, and his caseworker Elizabeth Bartley was asked whether she made the final decision regarding his placement.

''In theory, yes - but in practice I wasn't given a choice about who Luke was to stay with,'' she said.

''I was a very junior, new

The child's case worker Elizabeth Bartley has told the Coroner's Court the foster carer was looking after five children at the time of the toddler's death.

When asked whether that raised concerns, she said 'it always raised concerns' but that 'the problem
